WER’09 will be held at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Valparaíso, Chile and organized by the Department of Informatics. The University is located on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Valparaíso is one of the most important Chilean seaports and its historic quarter was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Valparaíso is also located just 5 miles from the city of Viña del Mar, one of the major vacation places for tourists in Chile.
By Plane
Due to its closeness to Santiago -115 kilometros- it is easily accessible overland. Although Valparaiso has its own airport, there are no commercial flights to Valparaíso. The closest airport with commercial service is Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL) in Santiago, some 2 hours away, which offers extensive domestic and international service.
By Bus
To get to Valparaíso from Santiago's airport, you may catch a bus heading to Pajaritos Bus/Subway Station outside of the airport terminal. This will drop you off at the North side of "Pajaritos" station on the outskirts of Santiago, cross to the South side of the Subway station to get to the Bus Platform. From here, buses leave frequently (each 20 minutes) for Valparaiso and other destinations; you may also take the subway into downtown Santiago. It is generally not necessary to have a bus ticket before arriving at “Pajaritos”. The trip lasts one and a half hours, and the buses service is working from 6 am to 10 pm. We recommend using either Tur Bus or Pullman. The price for these two bus tickets is less than US$10.
By Taxis
An alternative option to reach either “Pajaritos” or Valparaíso/Viña del Mar is using tranfers or taxis. There are many options such as Tur Bus transfers or Transvip. Traveling to Valparaíso can cost around US$75 to Valparaíso (1 to 7 Pax).
Yo can contact to Cynthia Galdames <cgaldames@turistour.cl> from Turistour, in order to use one of the following services to travel from airport to Valparaíso/Viña. Rates are in Chilean pesos. You can calculate current exchange rates here.
By Car
Finally, another alternative option is renting a car in Santiago's airport and taking Ruta 68.
There are many accommodation options in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso, but we have got some preferential rates for WER’09 participants. When making a reservation, please contact the chosen hotel directly, and make sure to let them know that you request the special rates for participants of the WER'2009 event at Universidad Federico Santa María.
Rates are in Chilean pesos. You can calculate current exchange rates here.
